The 4 Horsemen

Different people have different personalities. These personalities are often shown in the way people behave or react. People with pleasing personalities are those who act rationally and properly to the very end. It doesn’t mean that they are men pleasers. They may even act contrary to what people expect, yet they are still found to be attractive. They gently yet firmly speak their minds.

Beware of other personalities. They are plain manifestations of reactions, most likely negative ones. These personalities usually exist to please certain men. Let’s look at them and see whether we fall into any of these categories:

1. The Pretenders – People who are all talk but no action are pretenders. They want to be heard agreeing with the majority or with an influential person to get the feeling that they “belong.” They want to have the first and last word, but they don’t want to have anything to do with any action. They hate or fear being contrary to anything. Often, they are not who they say they are.

2. The Procrastinators – If you are all emotions, chances are that you will live on good feelings, but you will have no energy for staying power. You are a good starter, and you usually start on fire. But when hardships come and water down the fiery feeling, you quit and fade out from the picture completely. You ride on the pervading feeling or sentiment, whether pro or against. You want to be the first to shout “yes” and the first to quit.

3. The Robots – People who are “joiners” of other’s crusades just for the attendance are robots. They really do not believe in any cause because they live and behave contrary to the cause they have joined; they just want to be there because everybody’s there. The amazing thing about them is that they can keep doing this until the day they die. Like toy robots, their batteries keep them going…, going…, and going for useless long periods, until their batteries run out. How they can amuse their playful masters!

4. The Zombies – If robots operate to amuse their owners, zombies exist for no purpose at all. It doesn’t matter to them if what they do doesn’t feel good or is harmful to others. They persist on what they are doing because it makes them still alive.

These remind us of the four horsemen of Apocalypse who ride their horses well, look chivalrous, but actually bring trouble. If you happen to see yourself in one of them (or among them), there is still time to change.

Your hope is in empowering your mind to start having a pleasing personality — one that adheres to the right principles your practical mind has decided to live on. To a practical mind, nothing is impossible, as long as it will make you live a better life.

Anyone Can Be A Genius

Yes, you read it right – anyone can be a genius!

Though some may argue that geniuses are born, not made – some are indeed child prodigies – geniuses can actually be made. And yes, you too, can be a genius!

But before we go into that, let us first understand what genius really means. Yes, Einstein was a genius. Mozart was a genius. You can probably name a lot more – those you learned about in your history classes. And then there are those Mensa-type geniuses – or those who get astronomically high scores in IQ tests. But they are not the only geniuses.

Do you know people who are just very good or phenomenal at what they do? Great at their sport, great in relating with people, great at making money – well, you get the point. You just marvel at how well they do what they do – and how effortlessly they seem to pull it off. They are indeed geniuses.

But what do they have that you don’t have? It really is quite simple – they have the right attitude. They refuse to accept anything below average or mediocre of themselves. They expect success. They do not avoid problems, but rather thrive in solving them. With each problem solved, they become better. And, they never stop learning. They are never complacent with the knowledge or the skill they have right now. They continuously aim to improve themselves.

You too can be a genius. Start by thinking right. Erase all negative misconceptions about yourself. Rid yourself of all your emotional dramas and baggage – this may take some time, but when you finally do it, you will not only feel better but you will be more open to learning. Learn not only by reading or listening but by doing. Apply what you learn. Face problems head-on as they arise. And yes, never stop learning.

Mind Mapping Essentials

When you are given a project in school or at work, do you immediately make a step-by-step list of the tasks that you should perform in order to complete the project? Or, do you do everything that you can randomly and just try to organize and put together the project in the end, when you gathered have enough material?

If you have chosen the first option, then you may not be making the most of your mind’s potential. Making a linear, step-by-step list of the things that you need to do in order to accomplish a goal is much like how a computer’s ‘brain’ works.

On the other hand, if you have chosen the second option, then you have a wider array of choices when it comes to the paths that you can take to achieve your goal, since this is basically how mind mapping works.

Mind mapping is a concept or technique wherein your thinking process will be externally reflected in the form of an illustration or diagram. This was developed by Tony Buzan, who, in his web site www.imindmap.com, encourages people to “unleash the remaining 99% of their brain” through mind mapping.

This concept essentially follows the natural way that the human brain works. For example, when you think of or visualize the color red, your brain instinctively associates the word ‘red’ with apple, blood, cherries, a scarlet shirt that you may have worn at one time – anything that is associated with the color is what comes to your mind instead of just the word itself. So, from just one root word, your brain will immediately associate it with other words to broaden the scope of the topic.

This natural working of the brain, when illustrated on paper, is mind mapping. You can start by writing in the center of a piece of paper one word, representing one idea. From there - through the process of association – you can come up with several branches which all connect to your central idea.

The relationship between the main idea and all the branches that will stem out from the central theme is how the end process will look like. With mind mapping, you can organize your thoughts more coherently, new ideas will be better expressed and developed, you can retain information faster because of the fact that visual illustrations that you mapped out yourself is easier to remember than any list – all these and more are the benefits of mind mapping.

Aside from these benefits, there are hundreds of instances at work and in your home life where you can make use of the process of mind mapping to maximize your brain’s potential and save you a lot of time and effort when planning.

Tips to Motivate and Inspire People

Greg is a CEO of a small company in Pennsylvania. This man started the company somewhere in college and has developed it into an enterprise that is exporting goods to other countries.

One day, a former classmate from Penn State decided to call and ask the man to become the speaker of a small seminar on entrepreneurship back at the old campus.

Feeling honored about being given the opportunity, Greg sat down and started thinking about what to say to these people. The message should be clear and concise. “I will share my experience,” he thought. This will make the audience understand that his journey to the top was tough and there were a lot of setbacks.

Giving a motivational or inspirational message to people is like selling a product. The audience has to be convinced that if Greg was able to succeed, so can other people.

To make sure that Greg will be able to give a truly inspiration talk, he should make an outline. This should start with an introduction of the entrepreneur as a student who later on built a company. The main body should describe the details, such as the successes and the failures that became his lessons in life.

The end of the talk should focus on the things that are being anticipated and hoped for in the future. This will make people believe that having a business isn’t easy since one has to be always on the competitive edge.

The audience will really appreciate it if there’s an open forum after the talk. These people can ask certain questions which need more explanation. This can provide solutions to those having a hard time with an existing business.

After his speech, Greg will be able to know if his talk was effective if the audience will be given an evaluation sheet to be filled on the way out. This will give people like Greg a gauge on how effective the session was.

If people found it boring, then Greg should probably change a few things so that next time, the audience will feel inspired afterwards. Should the participants love it, this is a different story.

Greg has found a niche that can be used again to also motivate and inspire more people to work hard and be successful in life.

There are many ways for a person to spread the good word to others who need a little push. He can advertise the services to companies and other organizations that would like to get the help he can provide.

The individual can also write a book and then have this published. There are a lot of CEOs’ that have done this and the lessons learned are also applied and studied in business schools across the country.

Some people may not even have to write a book. The individual can also write the success story in a website which people can look for by making sure this is one of the popular ones that will pop out in one of the search engines.

Greg’s evaluation for the talk was very good. The friend who worked in campus asked if this could be done again. Greg didn’t know he has this talent inside. The lessons he learned can be shared to other people. This will inspire and motivate others who are probably thinking of giving up on their journey to success.

Reaching for Your Dreams by Aiming for Self-Actualization

According to Abraham Maslow, the ultimate life-goal of a person is to self-actualize. By this he means that we are born with a drive to fulfill our highest potentials.

He has created a Hierarchy of Needs. Needs, which he believes a person desires to fulfill in order to reach the acme of self-actualization.

On the lowest level are the physical needs. These are our needs for food, sex, etc. Next we have our safety needs: our need to be secure and free from harm. Then we have the love and belongingness needs, which is self-explanatory. Next is esteem needs: our need to be respected and admired. Then there are the cognitive needs and the aesthetic needs. The cognitive needs cover our desire for knowledge, while the aesthetic needs deal with our innate desire to experience and appreciate beauty.

At the topmost tier is the level self-actualization needs, the ultimate goal of human beings. Most people get stuck on the lower levels. They don’t and can’t get far, because either they have yet to exhaust the pleasure in the level that they are in, or they haven’t found contentment and satisfaction on that level that they want more and more to the point that they don’t want to leave.

For Maslow, only a handful ever really actualize. Abraham Lincoln, Albert Einstein, and Eleanor Roosevelt are the only few people whom he names who have self-actualized. For him, these people have these in common, among other traits:

λ Independence from others’ opinion and influence

λ Spontaneity

λ Acceptance of themselves

λ An objective perception of reality

λ They are task-centered

λ They know how to appreciate the mundane

λ They have deep and healthy interpersonal relationships

λ They have compassion for humanity

λ They do not have a rude or mean sense of humor.

With traits like those, it is easy to see how they have reached the acme in Maslow’s standards. Most people may have become financially successful, but they may have severe personality flaws like being exploitative or that they like poking fun at others’ shortcomings.

Self-actualization does not mean being perfect. Even Abe Lincoln was plagued with depression, according to history. But the key thing to these people is that they have achieved much and remained humble. They have inspired many, but think that they are but normal people.

Self-actualization is a process of increasingly becoming honest with yourself and with people around you, learning to be content where you are and living life to the fullest without resorting to drugs or hedonism. Life is meant to be lived with vigor and inspiration. Aim to self-actualize: the “getting there” part is quite fun too.

To Keep Or Not To Keep? (That Is The Question!)

“Should I throw this file away or not?”

Too often, you find yourself in a dilemma. You are not sure if this thing will still become useful and handy someday.

Sometimes you decide to throw a report; then after a week, you discover that you need it. Too late! You already sent it to the paper shredder! This makes you go through a range of emotions, which include feeling sorry, guilty, and angry with yourself. On the one hand, not throwing away things you think may still be useful, crowds your space and makes you irritable.

Perhaps, it is about time to use a guide. Sort and classify papers into three labeled bins:

1st bin for papers to keep – those that you are sure you need in the future
2nd bin for papers to ditch - those that you think are junk
3rd bin for papers on hold – those that you cannot decide for the moment.

If your 3rd bin becomes overflowing, you know that this is an exercise in futility and that you have to redo the whole sorting process all together.

Generally, most items under question can be discarded, as you will find out when you actually do it. If these were really important, it would have been acted upon promptly then and have occupied an important position or spot in your list of priorities. Since it was not used for quite a while, it gets outdated, making it less worthy than it was then. You now have a better reason to discard them.

Take for example the importance of a piece of paper. Ask yourself what the paper is all about. Align its importance with your main line of interest. If it is completely out of line, get rid of it.

If you think somebody else might be interested about the contents of the said paper, promptly refer it to the concerned person. What may not be important to you might be important to others.

Outdated papers like manuals, references, newsletters, and other printed matters are definitely candidates for the 2nd bin. Whatever is gathering dust since time immemorial will remain so, without any usefulness in the days ahead. It is best to discard it.

Things or papers in the 1st bin must be sorted accordingly. Sorting may be done according to topic, project, color, etc. This keeps your files organized.

Go through the papers in the 2nd bin. See if these are not outdated confidential files and see if these can be candidates for recycling.

See if the backsides of these papers are blank. You can save money by using these as scratch papers, as inter-department memos, for draft printing, and for other less formal purposes within the company. The same thing can be done with a used file folder. Turn the inside out and you’ve got a new folder ready for the next file that needs it.

Save money and help the environment. This way, you can still help in the worldwide campaign to minimize cutting of trees by maximizing the use of available paper resources. Do your part in clearing the environment.

Become an expert filer and free yourself from the clutter of files and unused things. Now, are you still keeping that outdated file? Are you still undecided? To keep or not to keep? Get those 3 bins ready!

How to Effectively Use Persuasion In Personal Selling

Upon hearing words such as ‘persuasion’ and ‘selling,’ what is the first profession that comes into your mind?

Majority of you would have thought of a salesperson.

The word ‘persuasion’ seems to have a unique and peculiar meaning that suggests conquering and winning over another person. People have this image of a master persuader, doing everything he can to sell something people do not really need or want.

Many people have the notion that salespersons would only stop pestering them, only after a hole has been dug through their pockets. If you have gone through this unfortunate experience, it is no wonder you think of salespersons as such.

In fairness, not all salespersons are like that. In fact, most people in sales are truthful. Yes, they are also equipped with a persuasive tongue. Most truthful salespersons are indeed persuasive.

Salespersons are equipped with persuasive skills in personal selling. Just like the words suggest, there’s a personal touch involved. In essence, personal selling enjoys an advantage over advertisements. If you are the customer, personal selling can immediately deliver answers to your questions. This is unlike advertisements where you have to be content with whatever is presented.

In order to succeed in the selling business, a salesperson must be persuasive. However, being persuasive does not mean having a sweet tongue. On the contrary, you have to be a good listener. Talking less and letting the customer do most of the talking opens the opportunity for you to know what your customers want. This is the most important part of selling — getting to know what their concerns and uncertainties are.

Since the customer’s interest is important, your intention to sell is only secondary. A good salesperson would exert every effort to make the customer feel comfortable in talking and expressing his needs and interests. You should wait for the right time. Only when the customer is ready and asks for it, then you can open up the topic on selling so as not to jeopardize your customer’s confidence in you.

Being a salesperson engaged in personal selling gets you face to face with your customer. Professionalism dictates that you must not take things personally when customers decline your offer. Good salespersons are trained to be stonehearted when issues get too personal for them. As a salesperson, you have to maintain composure and concentrate on your customer’s priorities.

The fact that customers spend time with you is a good indication of their interest in your offer to help them. While juggling your customer’s concern on one hand and your intention to sell on the other, try to find a common ground to keep the balls rolling!

Being a salesperson also necessitates that you know your competitors down to the smallest details. After all, they know a lot about you also!

Persuasion and listening are crucial ingredients to become good in sales. Maximize their use and become a top-notch salesperson in your industry!

Learn to Set Goals

There are those who are bounded by laws and rules, yet success is too distant for them. On the other hand, there are those who appears to be easy going people but are successful. Think you have what it takes to be like them? Or would you rather do something different to achieve the elusive success? Take heart and set your goals.

What do goals represent by the way? These are actually representations of your visions about you and your future. Goals should be achievable and realistic. These kinds of goals allow you to put them into practice or at least do some activities that allow you to monitor your progress. However, more is involved in just merely setting realistic goals. Remember that in order to achieve your goals, you must act according to your goals. Otherwise, all else would be vanity if you do not exert effort in reaching them. The following will help you set achievable goals:

1.     Enhance your skills in achieving targeted goals by setting objectives, as well as standard and optional activities that will help you meet your goals.

2.     Strategize and take risks in meeting your goals. Strategic thinking is very important because this will allow you to be productive and focus on the activities according to your goals.

3.     Act in accordance to your goals. Proper mind setting is very important in achieving your goals. Take the extra mile. Try taking risks but never compromise your safety. Taking risks means that you are ready to learn new things and challenges that will help you in the long run.

On one hand, you may wonder why there is a need for you to set goals if you think you have not failed at all in your endeavors. Remember that setting goals does not mean that you always fail. Setting goals means that you are acknowledging your limitations and you are ready to work your way up towards success, professionally or personally. It is for this reason why objective goals matter.

Moving forward, you also have to consider that there are goals that are just too hard to achieve on your own. At times, these goals even create conflicts that you might think of surrendering in the long run. Take heart. Everybody have similar concerns at times. If this situation occurs and you think that surrendering is the last option, why not look for a partner, a friend maybe who is willing to help you out with your goals? Collaborate with your prospective partner and learn to prioritize.  If it requires spending time in plotting all the possibilities, both the pros and cons, try it.

Remember that goal setting is focused on your benefits. So try working things out and focus, focus, and focus. Minimize or avoid distractions if possible so you can work your goals better. Work that proper mindset for a clearer vision of you achieving those valuable goals. If you are vying for promotion in your workplace, it is important that you see yourself already in the position you want. If you are aiming for a personal or educational goal, make things happen by planning and doing things related to your goals. You will then realize that goals, no matter how difficult they may appear, are still valuable to consider. Once your goals are achieved, sweet success knocks on your door commending you for a job well done.
