The Will to Rule

World history is replete with records of conquest. Man wants to rule. If Biblical accounts are to be believed, the drive to reign supreme started with the first man. He wanted supreme knowledge so he could be like God. He knew that ruling has to do with mind power.

Ever since time began, all rulers born on the planet have pursued mind power by acquiring every bit of knowledge available to them. Before they had the military might to conquer lands, they were brilliant thinkers initially.

Man seems to have an unquenchable thirst for power. At the back of his mind is the certainty that he was made for power. He exists to rule over all. The Bible mentions of a Creator that assigned man to dominate. Thus, even today, the urge to be in charge of the topmost positions and hold the reigns of power are still driving forces in almost every endeavor.

The drive to rule, however, can be very destructive when commandeered by the emotions. The desire to rule is inherent in man and is designed for his good. If he pursues it with a sound mind, all will be well. However, the emotions can sometimes be very assertive and can wrest power from the mind. When this happens, the will to rule becomes an instrument of oppression rather than benevolence.

The power to command and be obeyed stirs up the emotions so much; it does wonders to the ego. When a mind is well trained to be practical, it can control the will and emotions to stay within tolerable levels of assertiveness. Such characteristics apply to a leader or ruler who is balanced, gentle, and levelheaded. At the same time, he is wielding tremendous powers. The more he is obeyed, the more he becomes cautious of the power given to him.

A mind with no assertive powers over the will and emotions is characteristic of a corrupt leader greedy for more power. The more he sees his commands being obeyed, the more he feels good about his power.

Most drives to rule and reign start as benevolent ambitions to help people. But as power is made available, they succumbed to the urges of the emotions. Instead of helping people, the emotions are amused at being able to wield the power at the slightest whim. The result is the abuse of power.

The race of procreative cells into the womb of a mother prior to delivery is really a race to rule. The one cell that reaches the womb first reigns supreme over the rest. Thus, it is said that everybody born into this world is already a winner. We are born to be rulers. When you find the urge in you to rule, remember that it’s your destiny. Use it well.

Get Lean on the Go

“I don’t believe it!”, you gasp incredulously as you tip the scales. An additional seven pounds in one year? That explains the major belt-tightening moments you experienced when you tried on your favorite denim jeans that you have not worn for a long time.

You know you should exercise but you just don’t have the faintest idea how to incorporate it in your busy schedule. Getting lean on the go? Yeah, right! You doubt if it can be done. Well, thanks to this helpful article, you can melt those pounds away. Here are 3 “get lean on the go” tips for the workaholic individual.

1. “Move” inside your cubicle. If you are talking with someone on the phone, pace the floor. If you are reading important documents, use the paperweights as dumbbells and develop those biceps and triceps. Instead of maximizing the rolling wheels beneath your chair to move from one spot to another, get up and walk to stretch those legs. Skip the elevator and use the stairs. If this seems too much for you, try alternating the days between the two. This will surely boost your cause to get lean on the go.

2. Be creative outside. Park farther away from your building so you can walk, skip or hop to your heart’s content. Offer to carry someone’s heavy bag from the parking area to your building’s lobby. You can also offer to run errands for your coworkers if you are heading out for a lunch break. Not only will you lose weight, you will also promote camaraderie and goodwill in your office.

3. Be adventurous. If you are assigned an out of the country trip or just out on a much-deserved vacation, vanquish your fears and do the unthinkable. If you are in Mexico, try their spicy sauces to speed up your metabolism. You can also take a crash course in their famous salsa schools and dance the night away in a fun club. If you find yourself in Spain, indulge in the dramatic dance of flamenco or join the annual bull run event. Or, if a tropical paradise is what you want, you can have fun swimming, kayaking, parasailing or diving in different bodies of water.

So what are you waiting for? Get lean on the go with these smart tips. Have fun!

Understanding the Law of Karma

What goes around must come around. This is the basic understanding of the “Law of Karma” in the Western world in which it has already become an integral part of the prevailing culture and philosophy. In fact, you can trace similarities between karmic principles and those from modern cultures and religions. It can be related to the concept of doing good deeds in Christianity if interpreted as “if you do good things, then it will come back to you” or conversely, “if you do bad things, then bad things will happen to you.” The stark difference, however, comes with the Christian belief that everything can be overcome by love and forgiveness.

Meanwhile, modern spirituality, which revolves around the principle that virtue is rewarded and that sin leads to suffering, draws heavily from the “Law of Karma.” For a lot of people, it is a more sensible take on spirituality compared to that of eternal damnation for sinners.

Karma literally translates to “deed” or “act.” It is the law of moral causation that specifically includes the whole cause and effect cycle. According to it, nothing happens to a person that he does not deserve. Karma sums up everything that a person has previously done, is currently doing, and will be doing in the future. It is a universal principle, which means that no one can change its course except God or the Higher Universal Force.

Karma implies that a person is inherently accountable for everything that is happening to him. This implies that whether he experiences happiness or misery all depends on his actions. Karma encompasses all actions, and not just those perceived by the public. Even thinking badly about another person has its consequences.

The Law is central to Asian religions that were mostly created in India such as Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism, although there are stark differences between how it is explained.

In Hinduism, the “Law of Karma” involves the concept of a God and is used primarily to provide enlightenment on what is evil. It is broadly explained as the action-reaction relationship that universally governs our current and previous lives. The concept lies on our passionate or conscious action, and the corresponding dispassionate or unconscious reaction.

The Law was first explained and illustrated in the Hindu epic Mahabharata through a dialogue between the protagonist, Arjuna, and his charioteer, Krishna. The dialogue touched on various themes of morality and philosophy; and together with the Vendanta and Tantra, it has served as the cornerstone for the original Hindu concept of karma.

In Buddhism, the “Law of Karma” is used more in an ethical sense rather than an explanation for natural phenomenon. While differing in specific details with the way the Hindus see it, karma for believers of Buddhism focuses on the belief that actions of beings will affect their own future. In short, everything has its consequence. Those consequences may come within one lifetime or in one’s succeeding lives.

Note that in Buddhism, karma is focused more on the effect and not on the cause. The consequences of one’s actions are based on certain conditions. Karma entails the notion of Buddhist rebirth but is not its sole basis.

The Impact of Quantum Physics

The word “quantum” seems so difficult to comprehend, even more so when coupled with the word “physics,” when in fact, quantum physics simply means the study of the world or the universe at the subatomic level. Once that is clarified, learning quantum physics doesn’t seem to be so hard. After all, nobody can possibly be afraid of something so minute and discrete. Yet, it’s a wonder how much energy is packed into such tiny things. Over time, many scientists have contributed to the knowledge of quantum physics as we know today, starting from Albert Einstein himself.

Learning quantum physics may at first seem to be a daunting task. But in doing so, a greater understanding on how the world and ultimately the universe operate is acquired. Not only that. Much of the world’s science leagues are themselves doing intense study of these tiny subatomic particles. Although Fermilab has accomplished a major feat in building a particle accelerator miles long, CERN in Switzerland is set and on the way to beating that record. Why is that so? Both of them are looking for that tiny particle, the graviton in the atom. This theoretical sub-atomic particle is said to be the reason gravity exists in the universe.

Because of the massive energy each atom contains, much time has been dedicated for its study. Nuclear energy, a relatively new energy source, requires much study if it is to help the world’s energy problems significantly. In contrast, quantum physics have been used in warfare and results in damages so devastating that the manufacturing of nuclear weapons is banned in many countries.

With so many possibilities in the realm of quantum physics for worldwide improvement or destruction, much care is given to its study. Major discoveries and breakthroughs could usher in a golden age of physics, similar to what Einstein experienced in his time.

How else is quantum physics making an impact today? Quantum physics actually helps out science with the use of electron microscopes, lasers, trasistors, and magnetic resonance imaging(MRI), among others. But the technological advances don’t stop there — far from it. New developments are taking place, like the quantum computer — set to perform at speeds exponentially higher then your everyday personal computer. Quantum cryptography is in the works too — guaranteeing secure transmission of information. In the far future is the possibility of quantum teleportation — transmitting and transporting subatomic particles over arbitrary distances.

But most importantly, quantum physics aims to answer the questions every man has had since the beginning of time. Not so much as “how does the universe work?” but, “where does man fit in all of this?” and, “what is the significance of this in my life?”

Quantum physics may not provide the answer to these important questions directly. But this science is a key to unlocking certain mysteries in the universe. More than just answering the age-old questions of how and why, quantum physics has proven to be a valuable tool for advancing technology, as we know it today. Quantum Physics has helped the world take a big step into the future, shaping the world with nuclei and electrons and other subatomic particles: the building blocks of all matter still proving how essential it is to go back to the basics.

Right Environment Equals Maximum Efficiency

The desk is cluttered with memos that remain unanswered; numerous reminders in post-its obscure your view of the monitor; piles of books and reports obstruct your line of sight; around you are dusty boxes piled high.

Does this describe your workstation?

In order to attain an efficient and effective workstation, it should be neat and orderly. An orderly office clears the mind and avoids the feeling of being overwhelmed and stressed.

A few would argue that an overstuffed office is reflective of a busy and workaholic person. However, more and more people think that a cluttered office is the result of a disorganized mind of the occupant.

The main purpose for keeping your office organized is to cut down the time wasted in looking for misplaced files. Studies reveal that a typical office worker spends an average of thirty to thirty-five hours a year trying to find documents. This does not even include time wasted by the other person waiting for the document. Heaven knows if there are other parties affected!

It would be worth your time to keep in mind some ideas that will encourage greater work efficiency and thereby get more work done. Among these ideas are the following:

Keep your desk clear of clutter. Leave only items you frequently use like pens, staplers, paper clips, materials you are currently working on, and the like.

Refrain from turning your desk into a filing cabinet. Things not needed for the moment can occupy much needed space and gather dust. A dusty environment raises your risk of allergy and lowers your work efficiency. Other documents that you do not require at the moment must be filed in the drawer or filing cabinet.

If possible, computer hardware should be placed on a side table next to your desk for easy access. You can also place plants, pictures, and productivity/creativity motivators in the form of posters and stickers. Again, keep these reminders to a minimum.

Place filing cabinets nearby for handy access to files and references. Segregate often used from seldom-used files so that the latter does not get in the way of the former.

A variety of file aids like magazine holders are now available in bookstores. They come in various colors made of cardboard, plastic, or wood. File aids are great help to store paper files judiciously in vertical fashion.

These do not only save space but also allow easy accessibility. The shelf also looks more organized. It is also easier to discard old issues and add new ones. Group publications the way you feel or think will give you the best benefits. Label each holder accordingly.

Once in a while, review the contents of your shelves and filing cabinets to discard junk items and make room for incoming ones.

This eliminates the need for adding new shelves or cabinets. If you are unsure if you want to totally get rid of old items, the best place to keep them (at least for the moment) is the stock room. Ultimately, you will find them realistically disposable, thereby clearing the stock room as well.

Other offices have policies on retention schedules of documents. Unless considered urgent and important, some dispose documents that are 2-3 years old. These include regular administrative memos, old office announcements, and outdated reports.

It may take some time to get things in shape. Your initial attempts to clear your workspace may require revisions as you get acquainted with the new set-up. Any arrangement that does not enhance the flow or work process must be enhanced. Definitely, the final effect is a more efficient you, hence a more efficient workplace.

Psychologically, a clutter-free workplace frees your mind of unnecessary junk that may hamper your productivity and time efficiency. In the end, the winner is still YOU!

Breezing Through The Lines

Learning to read and write are but essentials in life. Speed reading is a way where the person can read at a faster rate and at the same time still understand the material effectively.

Speed reading is done because one can absorb a lot of information in a limited time frame through a faster pace. More information is stored in the short-term memory and the structure of the file is easily seen. Lastly, the person is able to withstand long periods of reading because the eyes are less tired.

Speed reading can be helpful to different kinds of professionals and students.  Effective speed reading begins with getting ready to read. Do the following to prepare yourself for speed reading.

  • Remove all distractions. Focus on the material you’re reading. Eliminate all the distractions, be it TV or radio. These things may occupy your mind. This, in turn, will decrease your concentration.
  • Know your purpose. Your purpose, be it an exam for the next day or just reading for fun, will help you in pacing how you will read.
  • Check out the book. Read the table of contents or blurb. Also, look at the key chapters of the book. This will help you assess what you are dealing with.

Now that you are ready to read here are some tips that can aid you in speed reading…

Tip #1: Focus on concepts rather than word by word.

When reading, grasp the main point of the document. Instead of focusing on a word per word basis, try grouping the words.  Concentrating on a word per word basis will eat up too much of your reading time.

Tip #2: Reading aloud does not help.

What you can read is faster than what you can say. In addition, merely moving your lips slows you down. To be an effective speed reader, you must learn to use only the eyes in reading and do not involve the mouth.

Tip#3: Do not read every word or be fixated with every word.

In addition, increase your vocabulary so that you may not get stuck in thinking the meaning of difficult words. Another technique that would help is using key words. Forty to sixty percent of the words in a page are not important. Train your mind to look for the key words so that you can skip the other words.

Tip #4: Avoid going back to the same lines.

Re-reading lines consumes time. Think of a book as a movie. When you miss a part, you don’t always stop and rewind what you watch but just let the video play.

Tip #5: Assess yourself.

To examine if you have fully understood the text, try testing yourself. Formulate questions along the way when you’re reading. This would evaluate your reading abilities.

Tip #6: Pacing is the key.

You may use your finger or a pen to read each line. Pace yourself using your finger or pen. This will also serve as your guide so that you do not read the same lines. As you progress in speed reading, you may not need this technique.

Tip #7: Practice, practice, practice!

Like any other skill, speed reading is not mastered after just one try. First, work on the pace, and then continue with comprehension. Practice with newspapers and magazines, and then move on to books. You can set a time goal so that you can control your pacing. You may first have a longer time for reading; but as you progress, your reading time will shorten.

Tip #8: Take hourly breaks.

Researchers found that it is more efficient if breaks are taken every hour, rather than reading for hours.

Effective speed reading involves the preparation before reading and the reading experience itself. These tips would surely help you in increasing your rate in reading and at the same time understanding what you read. It is easy to learn speed reading. The key to speed reading is practice.

Revisiting the Past to Heal the Present: Psychodynamic Therapy

No one on this earth is devoid of inner conflicts. True, there are a lucky few who have escaped having parents who screwed them up, but they still have inner conflicts nonetheless. It is a common notion in sociology, history, and even in modern psychobabble that the past affects the present. But is it really just psychobabble? Does Psychodynamic Therapy really work? Would it work on you?Psychodynamic Therapy was developed as a modified version of Psychoanalysis. Psychoanalysis was developed by the oft-mentioned and highly notorious Sigmund Freud. You may have heard of him when people refer to sex drives, but his theories were more than that.

Psychoanalysis is the process where the therapist lets you talk and talk and talk, while he probes and tries to understand you and tries to let you understand for yourself how the events in the past shape your inner climate in the present. The only difference with Psychodynamic Therapy from Psychoanalysis is that Psychodynamic Therapy does not involve a heavy emphasis on dream analysis and symbolism.

Yes it’s true that the past experiences influence your current attitudes. You may have a pattern of tuning out your wife when she nags because she reminds you of your mother when she does that. Or you may be overly affectionate with your sons because your father never hugged you when you were young.

When we were in our teens, we experienced a lot of conflicts because of the changes inside us. It became worse for us when our parents would offend us in their attempt to discipline us. This hurt, this pain, sometimes get locked in the deepest corners of our mind in a process called repression. This is what Psychodynamic Therapy seeks to recover and eventually make you understand, with the ultimate goal of freeing you from toxic emotions and unhealthy patterns.

Psychodynamic Therapy does not stop the moment you understand yourself. That is only the start. The goal of the process is to use this understanding to bring yourself to a place of healing. Understanding is step one. Accepting that these happened is step two. Processing your feelings, reconciling yourself to these events and making steps to change your patterns form the rest of the equation.

Psychodynamic Therapy may not be recommended for everyone by the therapists, but I believe that taking the concepts within the theories behind it and applying it for self-healing can be an enriching experience. To be able to metamorphose into a better person, you must know and understand yourself. Psychodynamic Therapy can show you how.

How to Help Somebody Suffering From Substance Dependence

If you know of a relative or a friend undergoing the crisis of being substance dependent, then you will need to be aware of certain considerations you might have to take to help him/her get through the process of withdrawal and recovery.

Getting over a substance can prove to be yet the most challenging experience for him or her. It’s best that you are there to provide the utmost support he/she needs. Below are some suggestions…

1.    Stay with the person. You don’t really have to say or do anything. Sometimes your mere presence is enough for reassurance. Being there counts.

2.    While the person is experiencing withdrawal, always comfort him/her by reminding that the symptoms are only temporary. Gradually they will disappear.

3.    Be aware that safety is the most important goal towards recovery. Substance abusers usually resort to taking in these things because they think it gives them relief from their problems. Without these substances, the person is faced with a situation he/she cannot escape from. At this point, suicides are highly probable.

4.    Be conscious of your own response. The person may have bouts of irritability or anger. Its best that you keep your own judgment objective. Don’t respond in anger or irritability also. What that person needs is understanding.

5.    If the person is hallucinating (seeing or hearing things that are not really there), be sure to present reality. Never ask them to talk about these hallucinations. It would be the same as acknowledging that these hallucinations are real when they’re not.

6.    Let the person express his/her feelings or concerns. Don’t interrupt or give advice. Simply listen. By doing so you might come to understand why he/she resulted to using a substance to cope with the stress he/she is going through.

Although a lot of the recovery depends on the person, it would mean a lot if he/she has significant others involved in the goal of overcoming substance dependence. You just might prove to be a vital instrument in making someone’s life better.

You also have to be a good conversationalist.  You must know how to handle a conversation because in some sessions, there will be times when you have to do most of the talking rather than just listening.
