Cultivating Your Inner Genius
All of us have the potential to be geniuses, but either we don’t know how or don’t know it is actually possible. Cultivating your inner genius is not really that complicated, but it does require time and commitment.
Below are some things you can do to unleash the genius in you:
1) Learn by repetition. Repetition equals retention. Whenever you learn a new concept, review it from time to time. If it is practical knowledge, apply it.
2) Use association. We learn in a context. If you are learning a difficult concept, associate it with something familiar and easy for you. Mnemonics, for example, is a good tool to take note of unfamiliar concepts.
3) Keep your learning environment stress-free. It is best to learn when you are in a relaxed, and even happy, mood. Worry, fear, or any negativity stunt the learning process while relaxation speeds it up.
4) Cultivate all your intelligences. The psychologist Howard Gardner, who is quite well-known in the field of education, states that there are different types of intelligence - verbal/linguistic, logical thinking, kinesthetic, spatial, interpersonal, intrapersonal, gustatory/olfactory, haptic, and gustatory/olfactory. All these intelligences are connected, so cultivating one can actually help cultivating others. So read, solve puzzles, cook, play a sport, make new friends - you get the point. It not only cultivates the genius in you, but you get more fun out of life!
5) Use classical music as a background. When you study or learn a new concept, play some baroque music in the background. This should be music in largo movement, with 60 beats per minute. Just keep the volume low. The rhythm and beats in this type of music does aid in learning, based on prior observations on learning.
6) Meditate. Regular meditation helps relax your mind and preps it to absorb new concepts. Also, when you enter a deep, relaxed state, your mind can better absorb whatever you feed it.
