Speech Writing: How to Make Your Audience Listen

Nobody enjoys listening to a speaker who rambles on and on without any evident direction or central theme. Given the increasingly busy schedules of people nowadays, getting a crowd’s apt attention all throughout even a three-minute speech is a challenge. But even if you’re not a seasoned speech writer or speaker, there really is no reason to fret. There are several ways to capture your audience’s attention and maintain it until you say “Thank you.”

Start With A Question

Beginning your speech with a question that challenges your audience is a great way to make heads turn your way. A question gives the impression that your listeners are vital to the effective delivery of your speech, instead of being mere spectators — and an individual who feels important will definitely want to stay alert for the entire duration.

Insert Humor

The best way to break the ice, especially if you’re delivering a speech to an unfamiliar audience, is to deliver a good joke. Your joke could be about the situation, about boredom, about the theme of your speech, or about yourself. Just be sure you stay politically correct and do not offend anybody. Laughter within a long speech will break the monotony and ensure a tighter audience recall on your message.

Choose Powerful Words

Every word in your speech must be carefully thought of. Throwing in the first word that comes to mind it will only make you look like an irresponsible writer and might also lead to misinterpretation. Keep your speech short, concise, and straightforward, and your quotes trimmed to the basics. Listeners will appreciate you more for not wasting their time with empty words and meandering concepts.

Great speech writing depends not just on content but also on its delivery. Convey your message with genuine interest and passion, and your audience will definitely share your feelings after a while.
