Stress Management in the Workplace
Did you know that 25% to 40% of workers in the United States suffer from job burnout, due to stress? In addition, research conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Bureau of Labor Statistics show that anxiety, stress, and neurotic disorders often more severely affect employees more than the average injury or illness.
With these kinds of numbers, one has to wonder what companies today are doing to decrease the amount of stress in the workplace. The fact remains that many companies lose employees, or at the very least see increased amounts of call-ins for sick days, all due to stress-related events within the company.
If you are an employee that struggles to deal with stress in the workplace, these statistics on stress may astound you. So what measures can you take to reduce stress and effectively manage stress in the workplace?
1. Don’t take work home. If your job is stressful, you need a place to relax and unwind after a long day. Don’t take work home with you. Leave work at work. Let your home be a sanctuary from the stresses of your job.
2. Get out more often. If you work indoors, you might not get to go outside much. Just getting a breath of fresh air and enjoying the beauty of nature can greatly reduce your stress levels.
3. Reduce your caffeine intake. Studies have shown that caffeine can increase your stress levels. Lay off the coffee and sodas and see if that helps reduce your edginess.
4. Get plenty of rest. All too often stress can be attributed to not getting enough sleep every night. Be sure to get in bed early enough and get 6-8 hours of sleep every night.
5. Drink lots of water. Water can tremendously help reduce your stress levels, too. Prevent dehydration by drinking lots of water throughout the day.
These tips will help aid in workplace stress management. Remember that it is up to you to do your part to reduce the stress you feel. Start by taking small steps today.
