5 Ways to Sleeping Better
by
Dr Greg Frost
Sleep. It is something we all need but very few of us actually give serious consideration to when we are planning the course of our daily activities. The average individual sleeps six to seven hours of sleep a night; however, in order to perform at its maximum potential the human body requires a minimum of eight to ten. Unfortunately, this is not always possible. Today’s society is a fast paced one, and there are certain things which must be sacrificed in order to maintain the status quo. Sleep is often one of them.
How, then, can an individual compensate for a lack of sleep in order to function at their full potential? By sleeping smarter, even if they cannot sleep for longer. Anyone who has ever spent a night in a light sleep or been woken at regular intervals knows that at the end of such a night it feels as though they have hardly gotten any sleep at all. On the other hand, a person that sleeps deeply for a brief period of time will wake feeling refreshed. Shown below are five tips to follow to help you too become a smarter sleeper.
1. Sleep in a darkened room. Unless you are one of those who are accustomed to sleeping through the day and are not bothered by direct sunlight you probably will not be able to sleep deeply with the sun shining through your window. Invest in a set of heavy, dark curtains. It is not necessary to completely eradicate the light, merely to filter it into the soft rays of early morning, regardless of its intensity
2. Do not sleep with the television on. Loud noises on the television will serve to wake you up at various intervals throughout the night, even if you are not aware of it; everyone wakes up in the night, it is just that they usually go straight back to sleep with no recollection of the event. If you are awakened by the television you are likely to have a more difficult time falling back to sleep than you would otherwise.
3. If you have a partner that snores or children who cannot seem to understand the concept of silence when someone is trying to sleep, or you are an exceptionally light sleeper for whatever reason, it would be wise to invest in a pair of professional quality earplugs, such as those used by musicians. You will be amazed at how refreshed you feel in the morning after not waking up at every squeak throughout the night.
4. Attempt to keep the room at a moderate to cool temperature. Studies have shown that a hot room only serves to make sleeping more difficult, and you can always huddle under your comforter or wear warmer pajamas to bed if you find that you are uncomfortable in the night.
5. Designate a quiet time before you go to bed every night and spend it doing something relaxing that does not generate a great deal of noise, such as reading or writing. Television does not have the same effects as these for soothing the system, as it is intended to be a stimulant
By sleeping smarter and better, you will find that your body is able to move faster and your brain stronger than they ever have been before.
