Uses for Subliminal Affirmations
by Dr Greg Frost

It is well known that the human mind is an incredibly powerful tool, able to multitask many activities and to perform tasks with the ease and skill of a machine if it has been properly trained. It is also speculated that the human mind operates on two main levels, the conscious mind and the subconscious mind. The conscious mind is able to focus on the events and ideas which are surrounding it in its reality while the subconscious mind exists to store repressed memories; things that may have been seen throughout the course of a day and disregarded as unimportant by the conscious. These events or items are retained by the subconscious until they are needed, at which point the conscious mind may “remember” them or they can be drawn out through hypnosis.

The standard belief is that the conscious mind is directly affected by the subconscious; ideas and images held by the subconscious will be directed at the conscious when the time is right and influence its perceptions and reactions. Those who attempt to use subliminal affirmations to influence a person’s behavior do so by incorporating messages or images which are not apparent to the conscious mind into some function of its daily routine. Subliminal messages incorporated into computer programs for use during daily occupations, particularly while at work, and those that are buried inside a musical track and then covered by the music are the techniques most commonly employed by field researchers.

The speculation of the effectiveness of subliminal affirmations has been speculated for many decades. The hoax perpetuated by James Vicary in 1957 stating that by using a tachistoscope to project the words “Hungry? Eat popcorn” and “Drink Coca Cola” for 1/3000 of a second at regular intervals throughout the course of a movie increased Coke and popcorn sales exponentially. The possible ramifications of this caused a number of advertisers to choose to hop on the bandwagon and embark on their own subliminal campaign. This sparked a conspiracy theory speculating on the ability of the government to control the people of the United States through subliminal affirmations and the process was banned from all advertisements.

While Vicary later confessed that his claims were a hoax the questions that his experiments raised refused to die. Many researchers launched their own inquiries. Companies began selling products intended to influence the subconscious and made a fortune. Apparently the uses of subliminal affirmations has proved to be useful and there has been many users worldwide that swear by its positive results..
